New Secretary Of HHS

Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) was named as the new secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services recently after a 52-47 vote in favor of Price. Nominated by President Trump, Price has always been a strong supporter of Republicans who wanted to revoke or reform Obamacare.

The immense experience that he has gained by working as an orthopedic surgeon has allowed him to weigh in many suggestions on reforming healthcare. In a recent statement, House Speaker Paul Ryan said, “Having Dr. Tom Price at the helm of HHS gives us a committed ally in our work to repeal and replace Obamacare.”

Tom Price has been a member of the Congress since the year 2005 and he was one of the featured speakers at the American Health Care Association/National Center for Assisted Living Congressional Briefing in the year 2011. Mark Parkinson who is the AHCA/NCAL President and CEO said that Price’s “healthcare expertise and emphasis on patient-centered care will help us build upon our ongoing efforts to provide quality long term and post-acute care to the elderly and individuals with disabilities.”

The CEO of LeadingAge, Katie Smith Sloan stated that their organization is happy to work with the new secretary and the administrative team at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services “to develop a meaningful regulatory system that not only addresses compliance, but serves to drive quality excellence for the individuals served and the staff that care for them.”

It is reported that some of the Senate Democrats continue to urge the Trump Administration not to go forward with the changes in Obamacare, which may result in a significant higher health care cost for American citizens. Democratic Senators Kirsten Gillibrand, Amy Klobuchar (Minn.), Sherrod Brown (Ohio), and Maggie Hassan (N.H.) recently submitted a letter to the new secretary of HHS in which they warned him against adjusting Obamacare’s age rating requirement.

“We write to express our serious concerns that the Trump administration is reportedly considering a change to the Affordable Care Act (ACA) that would have the direct impact of increasing health insurance costs for older adults and ask that this policy be removed from consideration,” the senators wrote. However, the new HHS secretary is yet to comment on the letter.

Seema Verma is the choice of Trump Administration for the new leader of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, and she will attend her first hearing in a few days with the Senate Finance Committee.
